8 of the best Autumn destinations

Best for history & sightseeing: Seville, Spain

Autumn is, together with spring, the best season for visiting Seville and wider southern Spain, without having to endure its extreme temperatures. In autumn, the citrus trees are bearing fruit and the city smells of oranges. Enjoy the city’s incredible sites, including the Unesco-listed  Alcazar palace, the Cathedral and the Plaza de España. Autumn and winter are also a great time to explore Seville’s world-renowned tapas bars, including Bar Alfalfa, El Rinconcillo and Casa Morales where you eat among centuries old wine vats. Cross the Guadalquivir River and spend the day in Triana where you will find many of Seville’s famous tile workshops.

From mid-September, the leaves of the vineyards surrounding Maribor are adorned with their most beautiful colours. The harvest is underway on what is, at least according to the Guinness Book of Records, the oldest vines in the world. Widely considered one of the best culinary destinations in Europe, Maribor is a destination to put at the top of your travel wish-list if you are looking for authenticity in the heart of Europe. And then in November Museumnacht arrives with 55 of Amsterdam’s top museums opening after hours. Listen to live DJ’s spinning tunes as you peruse the Van Gogh Museum and party among the tropical plants in the glasshouses of the ancient Botanical Gardens.

The other bonus is that you’re not limited in what you can take home and can shop without restraint. With its renowned fashion college, the city is home to some of Europe’s most innovative designers and their boutiques. Make a beeline for Dries van Noten and Essentiel Antwerp and expect to return with a new autumn wardrobe.
