Top five Halloween destinations

It’s that time of year again. Time to don the costume and hide behind the sofa, Halloween is here. Love it or hate it - and many people fall into the former - it’s a huge event for many people - and there are a number of destinations that simply can’t avoid it. Either because of chilling historical events or because they wholeheartedly embrace it.

We’ve outlined some of the places that do Halloween better than anywhere else. From the kid-friendly to the fascinating, let us know where is on your list for Halloween, too.

Disneyland Paris

Disneyland Paris turns a little ghoulish from the beginning of October through to November 3. Disney’s famous villains and mischief makers, including the likes of Cruella De Vil, Maleficent and Captain Hook, all roam around the Park.

The month is perfect for younger ones who like to be (slightly) scared - with the famous Disney Illuminations show being hijacked by a different villain every night.

Mexico, Oaxaca

The Day of the Dead in Oxaca is one of Mexico’s most traditional - and well-known - muertos celebrations.

Families visit cemeteries and leave gifts for their departed loved ones and the whole place is lit up with beautiful candles. Some companies offer experiences where you can leave flowers and offerings to those who have been long forgotten. Local bands known as a comparsas, bring a carnival atmosphere to proceedings by roaming around playing music.

Transylvania, Romania

Transylvania is synonymous with Halloween as it was home to the (fictional) Count Dracula who was inspired by the (definitely non-fictional) Vlad the Impaler. Travellers flock to Vlad’s birthplace in Romania to soak up the atmosphere with other fans of the gruesome. Partygoers can head to Bran Castle, which has been marketed as the birthplace of Dracula, although there is plenty more going on throughout Transylvania during Halloween.

Salem, USA

Home of the infamous Salem Witch Trials, where more than 200 people were accused of witchcraft between February 1692 and May 1693, pretty much guaranteed a place for Salem on our list of Halloween destinations.

The city goes big for Halloween too with a month’s worth of events to commemorate the period, kicking off with a parade around the city.

Given its proximity to the beautiful city of Boston (it’s about 30 minutes by train) it also pairs up nicely with a stay in both cities.

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague’s gothic architecture lends itself perfectly for a spooky Halloween stay. The city, which is known for its nightlife, also hosts some excellent Halloween parties across its bars and clubs. Much of the activity centres around Prague Castle, which looks a little scary at the best of times, but visitors will also be able to take part in the city’s costume parade that goes through Prague Old Town or enjoy the chilling events that take place at Petrin Tower while also enjoying the panoramic views of the city.
