There is a world of possibility out there and you are in charge of your own travel story. Start the year off right with some big adventures.

February is a great month to cast off and go in search of adventure. Why not spend Valentine’s Day in the beautiful national parks of Patagonia, heading through Chile to some of the most unspoilt landscapes in the world. February is also a great time to visit some of the traditionally warmer parts of the United States. Mardi Gras in New Orleans is in February while Florida benefits from a much balmier climate than at other times of year.

The Middle East is warm without being overbearing, meaning that it is the perfect time to visit countries like Oman, whether it’s hiking through the beautiful Hajar Mountains or being pampered in one of the country’s incredible hotels. Or, if you want to see something more off-the-beaten-path, what about Bhutan? Largely untouched by the modern world, the country has a strict entry policy so booking ahead is essential.

The arrival of Spring brings lots of incredible opportunities to travel and see nature at its finest. Japan, always a popular destination, sees crowds flock for the magnificent cherry blossom. May can be a quieter time if you want the warm temperature without the crowds. It is also a great time to visit Morocco, and much of North Africa, before the weather heats up too much. The Atlas Mountains are magnificent at this time of year. Elsewhere, the Seychelles, have warm, sunny conditions with the odd shower to cool everything down.

The start of our summer means dry season across much of sub-saharan Africa, making it the perfect time to head off on safari. In Botswana the water levels in the Okavango Delta are at their highest. Borneo is also one of the few places in southeast Asia where good weather prevails, making it a great time to see orangutans in their natural habitat. Costa Rica’s seasons differ depending on which part of the country you visit but May is great for both beach and wildlife, although there may be a bit of rain.

June

Europe’s summers seem to be getting hotter but June is warm without seeing the record temperatures of July and August. This makes it the perfect time to enjoy the likes of Greece and Italy, and their world-famous cuisine. June may seem like a strange time to visit Vietnam but there will be fewer crowds because of the rain and this is less of an issue in the central part of the country with places like the ancient capital of Hue. If you want a really special experience why not look at going gorilla trekking in Rwanda?

July

July is a great time visit the tropical islands of Fiji, with the wet season ending in about April. It leaves the verdant landscape that comes to mind when we think of these paradise islands. The summer is also a great time to visit Canada, which allows visitors to make the most of the country’s incredible wildlife, including bear spotting in the coastal rainforests - although the famous salmon run isn’t until around September. Safaris are also in full swing, with the great migrations taking place across Tanzania and Kenya.

From gatherings of hundreds of wild elephants in Sri Lanka to grizzly bears in Alaska, the warm summer months are perfect for seeing incredible wildlife. Go whale-watching in Iceland or people watching on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro. In Brazil, it’s slightly cooler meaning it’s also a great time to get out into nature, visiting regions like the Pantanal, the world’s largest flooded grasslands.

It’s the perfect time to visit countries like South Africa where it’s easy to combine visiting the winelands with opportunities to spot newborn wildlife in the bush and migrating whales off the coast. Portugal and Spain have started to cool down, too, making for much more pleasant evenings walking through the beautiful streets. Mauritius sees its winds die down while the majority of the tourist crowds have long gone home.

Autumns in South Korea are akin to those in New England, with the colour of the landscapes dictating popularity. October is a good time to visit the Middle East too with the summer’s heat starting to abate. Similarly, the month is a good time to visit Hawaii, particularly if you aren’t restricted by the school summer holidays with many resorts not being as expensive as during the peak months.

November

November is a popular month for Thailand, with the ending of the wet season, making the resorts on the west coast popular, particularly Krabi and Phuket. Similarly, November is the start of a drier period for the Maldives - and with it the chance to see gigantic whale sharks. It is also the perfect time to head west and visit Uruguay. The South American country is warm and hospitable - and offers some of the best steak in the world. See the gauchos and explore the vast landscapes. Or, if you want to see incredible wildlife, consider the Galapagos Islands host where November sees the blue footed boobies raising their chicks.

December

It’s the end of the year and a chance to see it off in style. December is typically a busier month because of the festive holidays but it’s also an incredible chance to go out and see the world – although travel needs to be booked well in advance. Much of the Caribbean is idyllic around this time and Antigua and Mexico are no exception. Slightly further afield, New Zealand is also blessed with beautiful weather - although many of its festivals, including the Marlborough Food & Wine Festival, take place in February.
